Much Cowarne

St Mary the Virgin

Service Times

Second Sunday of the month:- BCP Matins  - 10am

Fourth Sunday of the month:- Holy Communion - 10am

The parish of Much Cowarne is made up of farms and hamlets; but its amenities make it an attractive location. Its 400 inhabitants are mainly farmers, commuters and retirees. Barn conversions have brought in many newcomers who comment on the friendliness of Much Cowarne.

Many local organizations (such as the WI, and shooting, history and quilting groups) contribute to this community spirit. However, there is no doubt that our church is the mainstay. There are now two services a month in the church and we have an improving attendance at our  Matins service. The enthusiastic PCC includes some great talents available to the church and parish. The fund raising events organised by the PCC are widely supported by local people who help to run them and which attract visitors from a wide area. In 2011 we held a cheese and wine evening  in church inviting local people who might be willing to help with our community events. It was a great success and a similar evening occured in 2012 as a thank you event. The church has recently-restored bells. Our team of locally-recruited and trained ringers welcomes visiting teams from around the country. The church has a happy and close relationship with Burley Gate CE Primary School and with the local Rainbow, Brownie and Guide groups.

Our principle mission objective is to reach out to non-Christians, and to all whose faith has wavered.

The church now consists of a large tower, nave with south aisle and decorated chancel, although the remains of the former north aisle, dating from the early 13th century, can be seen on the outside north wall. The south aisle dates from the later 13th century.

The inside of the church is spacious with some interesting monuments. There are also three piscinas meaning that there must have originally been three altars in the church.

The church has undertaken a full restoration of its bells in recent years and our team of locally-recruited and trained ringers welcome visiting teams from around the country.
